In the early 50s detectives were mostly kind of stodgy middle aged guys like Martin Kane, Eddie Drake, Charlie Wild, etc. Later in the 50s the suave, smooth,sophisticated PI came along. Gunn was one of the best. Super support cast in Hershel Bernardi, Lola Albright and Mother.

We also have the 1967 movie, with Laura Devon as Edie and Ed Asner as Jacobi.
