We visited KC for the first time in years in June, 2004 and again in September, 2004.
It's
a nice town except for getting around. Streets very often change
names without
warning--go
west on 43rd looking for Broadway and you won't find it; the big sign says
JC
Nichols Parkway. A number of major arteries like SW Trafficway and
Broadway do not allow
left
turns at important intersections. Come off I-35 onto SW Trafficway and
the exit is on
the
left. Etc., etc., etc. Once one gets used to these idiosynchrasies,
it's not
too
bad getting around. But if you are a new driver there, study a map
before you go.
We
stayed at Southmoreland Bed &
Breakfast, which we highly recommend. Very near
the
Plaza, and the Nelson-Atkins Art Museum. Excellent room in a very
nice, quiet
neighborhood.
Very well run and beautiful.
The
Nelson
is always worth a visit. Beautiful grounds, and also a very good place
to
have lunch. A definite place to visit for some great art.

We
found a delightful place, the Toy and
Miniature Museum. Zillions of tiny things,
great
old toys from all eras, and a very nice building. We recommend you
see this.
It's one of those places you can go back to again and
again.
We recommend a visit to the Kemper
Museum of Contemporary Art, which is not
far from both the Nelson and the Southmoreland B&B.
A very broad range of
contemporary pieces. Also has an excellent restaurant.
FOOD
For
great Italian food in Kansas City we recommend Frondizi's,
located about 45th and
Main,
down the block from Southmoreland. One of the best plates of gnocchi
I've had
anywhere.
We
had a great Spanish tapas meal at La
Bodega, 703 Southwest Blvd., almost directly under
I-35.
The tapas plates were superb, especially the patatas bravas.
Service was excellent. A fun spot.
Boling's
is an excellent spot for Chinese food. The moo-shoo is outstanding.
Very
nice ambience and good service.
