Health Notes
Support "Fund The Fight, Find the Cure" by buying and using the breast cancer research stamp from the U.S. Post Office. All net proceeds will benefit breast cancer research. One in eight women will experience breast cancer. But remember, men can get breast cancer too! The stamp was designed by Ethel Kessler of Bethesda, Md., and illustrated by Whitney Sherman of Baltimore. This is the first postage stamp illustration by Sherman, and is the first stamp design completed by Kessler, one of six art directors developing stamp designs for the Postal Service. Kessler has a personal interest in helping raise awareness about breast cancer since she is a survivor of the disease. For more information about breast cancer contact Against Breast cancer's website at www.winabc.org
Another stamp issued focuses on Prostate Cancer Awareness. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in men; early prostate cancer often does not cause symptoms.
Inspiration: Beating All Odds--There seem to be some characteristics that persons who beat the odds have in common. These people come further along than expected in their recovery and outcome. What can they teach us?
Optimism--The typical response to a life-altering event is "Why Me?" Persons who fight back refuse to feel like 'victims'. They decide to get informed, understand their health choices and exercise their options. They exercise control, knowledge and active responsibility. They believe in themselves and in their ability to 'heal' (which is different than 'cure'). You can be healed emotionally, psychologically and spiritually without being physically 'cured'.
Fighting Spirit-means seeing health issues as a challenge for growth and learning, a "wake-up call." Accepting a diagnosis without accepting a prognosis. Fighting spirit does not mean refusing to be sad or fearful. But you refuse to let unpleasant emotions spiral downward. You find a balance--not idealistic not pessimistic. These persons who defy the odds develop healthy lifestyles, support systems, are active as possible in their community, and pursue activities that they find pleasurable and relaxing.
Adaptability--people who triumph over difficult situations of all kinds tend to be those who are most adaptable and flexible. This means having a willingness to change your healing strategy as your situation changes. And a willingness to look at things from a new perspective. Occasional setbacks are a part of recovery and not a sign to give up.
Personal relationships--There's a clear connection between your personal life and your health. Individuals with good support systems, family, friends, church, catch fewer colds, are less likely to develop heart disease and tend to live longer.
Mental imagery--our thoughts and emotions have a powerful influence on our reality and our health. Negative messages and emotions get communicated within the entire body. Work on affirmations. Accept imperfection in ourselves and others. Learn Compassion. Forgiveness. Love.
Spirituality--People who pray experience less stress, increase sense of well-being, and reestablish a connection to life and purpose. Ask for direction or guidance and be open to receiving it. Be with nature to realize the connectedness of all life. People who beat the odds appreciate and are grateful for the things they have and don't take them for granted.
