Sex difference:
Mature males are blue-black in colour; females tend to have paler markings.

Breeding:
Aquarium spawnings are said to have produced broods of up to 800 fry,
although aquarium-raised breeding pairs are more likely to produce and raise much
smaller broods. As the fry begin to show dark stripes on the body, remove them
to a separate raising tank before theparent fishes begin the spawning cycle
again and lose interest in protecting the brood.

Comments
Before the reign of the Angelfish, this fish was the most popular of the
cichlids. It has dazzling beauty, it is hardy, a good breeder and parent.
A dependable show piece. It can live for 10 years or more and becomes quite the pet.
