He also was appointed Treasurer of the U.S. Mint by President John Adams, and served from 1797 until his death in 1813.
Dr. Rush was the great-great grandson of Capt. John Rush ("Old Trooper"), of English Civil War fame.
Benjamin Rush married Julia Stockton, daughter of Richard Stockton, on January 11, 1776. Mr. Stockton was another signer of the Declaration of Independence, but for New Jersey. Benjamin Rush signed as a Pennsylvanian. Dr. Rush and Julia had 13 children (John, Anne, Richard, Susanna, Elizabeth, Mary, James, William, Benjamin, Benjamin, Julia, Samuel, William), but four died in their first year (Susanna, Elizabeth, William #1, Benjamin #1).
Dr. Rush is buried in the very small Christ Church cemetery near Liberty Hall in downtown Philadelphia. Many other prominent figures of the time are buried there too including Benjamin Franklin. The cemetery is fenced & locked, so you must arrange your visit in advance through the National Parks Service. I think a hotel now stands next to the graveyard -- I visited Dr. Rush's grave when I was very young.
From Marty M.: Christ Church still stands. It is away from where Benjamin Rush is buried because that graveyard was purchased when the plots around the original church were filled. Christ Church is at 2nd and Market, and the burial ground is at 5th and Arch. The Church's web site is: http://www.ushistory.org/tour/tour_christc.htm
I've heard from many other descendants since I posted this page in 1998(?), including some who still bear the Rush surname. My great-grandfather's family, from Philadelphia, is my connection to the Rushes.
If you are researching your Rush family ties, the follwing is a great place to start.
